In Chinese mythology it was believed that a white rabbit lived on the moon, pounding herbs for the immortals. This imagery originated from early Chinese poets observing dark spots on the moon, which they interpreted as a rabbit’s outline. The rabbit as a symbol embodies longevity, peace and prosperity.
The work also features a distinctive purple plum on the lid. Plums and plum blossoms are symbolic of resilience, perseverance and hope. Plum blossoms bloom in March and so are also seen as a harbinger of Spring!

The Orchid Fish Snuff Bottle is inspired by my recent trip to Singapore and Malaysia. As I have mentioned often in my work, so much of my research and visual inspiration stems from my British and Singaporean heritage but I think this trip really affirmed how much of Singapore and Malaysia’s architectural and decorative history is embedded within my practice.
The work takes references from ceramics, buildings, plants, mythology and everyday sights from Singapore and Penang. These sights and my memories of Singapore have hugely contributed to the colourful, playful and ornamental nature of my work. The vibrant colours, ornamentation, creatures and patterns relate to my previous Snuff Bottle editions that explore mythology and design traditions across different cultures.
